Improving the user experience for DHM Pathology

DHM Pathology (DHM) is one of Australia’s leading pathology providers, supporting medical practitioners, patients, and healthcare organisations through a large network of laboratories and collection centres. With a broad range of audiences accessing the website for different needs, from test information and clinic locations to practitioner resources and patient services, DHM required a more intuitive and user-friendly digital experience.

DHM partnered with Soda Digital to redesign the front-end experience of its website through a complete overhaul of the platform’s user experience (UX), user interface (UI), navigation, and information architecture.

The project focused on improving how patients, healthcare professionals, and clinic staff access and interact with important pathology information online. Rather than rebuilding the full CMS platform, Soda Digital was engaged to redesign the entire front-end experience and create a scalable design foundation that could support the future growth of the DHM digital ecosystem.

The Challenge

Over time, the DHM website had grown into a large and complex information environment serving multiple user groups with different goals and levels of digital confidence. Navigation pathways, page layouts, and content structures needed improvement to help users find information more quickly and reduce friction across key journeys. At the same time, DHM wanted a more modern and consistent interface that could:

  • improve usability across desktop and mobile

  • simplify navigation

  • support future digital growth

  • create stronger visual consistency

  • provide a scalable framework for future development

The project also needed to work alongside DHM’s existing Umbraco environment, with front-end integration to be completed internally by the DHM development team.

The result is a cleaner, more modern, and easier-to-use experience built around usability, accessibility and long-term design consistency in a reusable, component-driven design system. Artefacts from the redesign were also developed into a reusable NPM package, helping create greater consistency between design and development while streamlining future front-end implementation work.

Solution

Working collaboratively with DHM stakeholders, Soda Digital followed a structured UX process that included:

  • discovery and planning

  • information architecture review

  • sitemap development

  • wireframing and UX refinement

  • UI exploration and visual design

  • stakeholder feedback and iteration

  • responsive front-end development

Every stage of the process was designed to improve usability while balancing the needs of patients, practitioners, and healthcare staff.Soda Digital delivered a complete front-end UX and UI redesign for the DHM website, including:

  • revised information architecture

  • redesigned navigation systems

  • responsive page layouts

  • component-based design assets

  • fully coded HTML and CSS templates

The engagement focused heavily on improving user experience through clearer structure, simpler interactions, and more intuitive pathways across the site.
